Dr. Craig Witherspoon
Superintendent of Birmingham City Schools
Dr. Witherspoon came to Birmingham from North Carolina in 2010. His charge as superintendent has been to enact positive and systemic change in the Birmingham City School system. He works closely with Ed to carry out its Strands and provide a challenging and competitive education for all BCS students.
Dr. Mike Froning
Executive Director, Birmingham Education Foundation
Before becoming the first and current Executive Director of Ed, Dr. Froning served as math teacher and Director at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and Dean of Education at University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Froning left the more formal teaching profession in March of 2010 to join Ed and participate more directly in the urban schooling debate. Since then, he has led Ed to its prominent role as a critical ally of the Birmingham City Schools and the voice of the community and of positive and systemic change. He is also the program specialist for Professional Development.
Marcus Carson, MBA
Program Manager, Birmingham Education Foundation
A Birmingham native and graduate of Huffman High, Marcus Carson completed his undergraduate and graduate studies at Florida A&M, where he earned his MBA in 2008. He is the founder and Executive Director of Growing Kings, another local non-profit with a mission of “Building Stronger Men Everyday.” At Ed, Marcus serves as Program Manager and supervisor for the individual Program Specialists.
Victoria Hollis, MA
Program Specialist, Birmingham Education Foundation
Victoria graduated from Auburn University in 2009 with a Master’s in English, and went on to teach freshman-level composition classes at Auburn University at Montgomery. Her collegiate studies in identity theory in literature and her progressive teaching pedagogy merged and evolved into an interest in education reform in the years that followed her teaching career and, in May 2012, Victoria relocated to Birmingham to join the team at Ed; she currently serves as the Career Academies Program Specialist.
Kendall Smith Salter, MPA
Program Specialist, Birmingham Education Foundation
Ms. Salter is a native of Birmingham, Alabama who received a double major in Economics and Spanish from University of Alabama and an MPA from UAB. Ms. Salter worked as a graduate intern with One Roof and M-Power Ministries and as a community planner for FEMA in the Long Term Community Recovery (LTCR) department. Ms. Salter is excited to bring a nonprofit perspective to BEF’s work in the Birmingham City School system as the program specialist for Parent Involvement and to build upon her community engagement experience to reach out to BCS parents and families.
Jamichael Tere’s Hall
Program Specialist, Birmingham Education Foundation
Originally from Anniston, Al, Jamichael graduated in the spring of 2011 from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor’s degree in Communication and a minor in Journalism. Education and mentoring have always been distinct passions for Jamichael, and he joined Ed to continue in that line of work, in a city where his heart feels particularly motivated to be apart of change. He is currently the Pre-Advanced Placement Program Specialist at Ed.
